A Course In Miracles
return to "The Course" main-page:
When you are afraid, be still, [go within] and know that God is real, and you are His beloved Son in whom He is well pleased. Do not let your ego dispute this, because the ego cannot know what is [real]
All fear is ... reducible to the basic misperception that you have the ability to usurp the power of God [that is, that you are separate from and in competition with God].
You are very fearful of everything you have perceived but have refused to accept.
The escape [from fear] is brought about by your acceptance of the Atonement, which enables you to realize that your errors never really occurred.
If you are afraid, you are valuing wrongly... You believe in what you value... Everyone defends his treasure...
Whenever you are afraid you are deceived, and your mind cannot serve the Holy Spirit.
The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.
Editor’s note: The root of fear is a belief in loss and separation, of needing to defend oneself, of not having or being enough. Love, however, is a sense of oneness, of unity. While all this is true enough, the Course aims to unveil a higher-order love which has no opposite. See further discussion in the article, "The Greatest Virtues Of God's Mind Have No Opposites."
Everything that has a beginning is also subject to an ending.
But there exists a domain beyond the reach of time’s degradation. There, things simply exist, eternally, have always been, have no opposite, no duality, and do not suffer loss.
All healing is essentially the release from fear.
Corrective learning ... often entails fear, because you are afraid of what your spiritual sight will show you ... When the Holy Spirit is permitted to look upon the defilement of the altar, He also looks immediately toward the Atonement... Discomfort [of fear] is aroused only to bring the need for correction into awareness... The real vision is obscured, because you cannot endure to see your own defiled altar.
Editor's note: Raymond Lodge, communicating from the other side, concurs with the Course's "you are afraid of what your spiritual sight will show you." He says, “If only people would go within themselves more, just now and then, they could reach out and get a good deal of what [I have] learnt [in Summerland]. But when they want to do things on the Earth-plane, they don’t wish to go within themselves, because they are afraid of reaching a decision against what they [that is, their lower natures] wish to do. That is the reason people can’t choose between right and wrong.” See on the "true self" page an extensive list of thinkers who advocate "going within" to find truth.
The correction of fear is your responsibility. When you ask [Jesus or God] for release from fear, you are implying that it is not [your responsibility]. You should ask, instead, for help in the conditions that brought fear about.
