A Course In Miracles
return to "The Course" main-page:
The “little I” [the small ego] seeks to enhance itself by external approval, external possessions, and external “love” … We [the small ego in us, will] “love” another in order to get something [for] ourselves. That, in fact, is what passes for love in the dream world [of perception].
The special [friendship and marital] relationships of the world are destructive, selfish, and childishly egocentric … The world uses its special relationships as a final weapon of exclusion and demonstration of separateness ["exclusion," in that, the egoic lover does not authentically love his or her counterpart - because the ego is incapable of true love - but considers a mate to be personal property, a pleasure source, an asset on a balance sheet; see further discussion of this balance-sheet mentality in the article concerning the original Ten Commandments; also see “The Wedding Song” for more discussion on the egoic marriage]
Think of the love of animals for their offspring, and the need they feel to protect them ... because they regard them as part of themselves. [This is very similar to human egoic love; to the ego, both one's child and one's mate are just an extension of self.]
Love will enter immediately into any mind that truly wants it ... wants it without ... the ego's "drive to get"
The body is the ego's chosen weapon for seeking power through relationships
